Mission

  • To provide Stars members with an opportunity to improve their orienteering skills through organized training sessions.
  • To encourage regular physical training.
  • To create a social environment for juniors and families, and for building team spirit and enthusiasm for orienteering.
  • To encourage participation in events outside of the Waterloo region.

Beginner: those wishing to learn and practice the basic skills;
Intermediate: those wishing to improve their skills at an intermediate level.

If you plan to attend a training event, please be sure to contact us at the latest the evening before the event.

What to bring and wear

Wear something comfortable for running in, and be prepared to get wet, muddy, and perhaps sweaty, depending on weather. If you take shortcuts through the bushes, be prepared to get some tugs in your clothes. Running shoes are fine for the feet.

Bring a water bottle.

If you have a compass, please bring it along. A simple $10 hiking / orienteering compasses with a flat, transparent plastic base and rotating bezel is fine for beginners (mirrors etc. are not useful). We will have some such compasses available for general use.

During races, whistles are mandatory gear, to be used if you get lost or need assistance. You might as well start getting used to bringing one with your compass whenever you head out the door for orienteering, so if you have one, please bring it along. Any cheapo plastic whistle will do, as long as it can make lots of noise!

Fees

  • $8 per session, or $40 for all six;
  • 50% of cost for basic members;
  • Free if you're a full club member.
